What our children's eye test includes:

During your child’s appointment, our friendly optometrist will make the experience relaxed and engaging, using age-appropriate techniques and equipment to put them at ease. We’ll assess not just their visual acuity (how clearly they can see), but also a range of vital visual skills that support learning and everyday activities.

Focusing ability (accommodation): Checking how well your child’s eyes adjust to see things clearly at different distances, important for switching between the board and a book in class.
Eye coordination (convergence): Assessing how well both eyes work together, which can affect reading, tracking words across a page, and hand-eye coordination.
Depth perception (3D vision or stereopsis): Evaluating how your child judges distances and perceives depth — essential for activities like catching a ball or navigating their environment confidently.

Many children don’t realise they’re seeing differently, routine eye tests help catch issues early.

  • First test – around 18 months: Helps detect early signs of lazy eye, squints, or other congenital vision issues. Early detection makes treatment most effective.

  • Pre-school – around 4 years old: Ensures your child’s vision and visual skills are ready for learning before starting school.

  • School age – every 1–2 years: Regular check-ups from school entry to 16 help track changes in eyesight and eye health as your child grows.

  • Teenage years and beyond: Continued eye care supports healthy vision habits and helps manage the visual demands of study, sport, and screen time.
